We arrived in Jerusalem at night. The streets were empty of tourists but in the squares you could see groups of soldiers, all young, men and women, dining in silence on the terrace of a bar. In front of the wailing wall, only a few worshipers remained, swaying back and forth to memorize the words of the scriptures.. From the desert the wind came loaded with sand, the purple sky. The echo of prayers rose in the streets, and in the speakers of the minarets the Adhan. One walked through that city like in a dream, being careful not to trip or break anything so as not to wake up. In Jerusalem one feels surrounded by a disturbing peace. Very similar to the feeling of calm that is experienced just before the storm. This is the image with which we begin our journey, that of a state of alert, of “active serenity” as Julián Marías would say.
